A Minute with Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen
Just spend a minute with Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen and you will understand what has elevated her to the stature she is today. Saying she is charismatic is an understatement. Saying she is inspirational is not even being fair to her.
I attended the seminar by Beliawanis Malaysia entitled "Destiny of Hope - Beliawanis towards a new era" today in Wisma MCA and had the honour to see her in action. From the moment she stood, she shines, she motivates, she exudes power and she weaves a story with such compassion it tugged your heartstrings. One could understand her fight for women rights, her strong advocate for women empowerment, her bondles energy to inspire others to better themselves. Humility seems to be a general characteristics of all successful and powerful women. Thus, it is true what she says about women having the challenging tasks of being hard in a soft/demure kind of way. Having their own say and independence while maintaining their maternal instincts at the same time.
"I have never sat at the back before!" A strong statement uttered by a lady who commands attention every time she speaks. Same goes applies to Bridget Lai, the CEO of ALliance Banking who rose the ladders from a mere teller and now heading a global bank. Great achievement for a Malaysian lady who expresses that women in Malaysia should count themselves lucky as they are better off than their counterparts in Thailand, Philipines and Indonesia. "The world is your oyster," so says she.
"Let me be the bad cop," so says Datuk in her tireless attempt to rise up from the norm and to stand out. To create commotion in a good way and to demand for things her way. Thus, another trait of powerful women being having the end in mind, being focused and knowing what one wants.
"In every challenge and problem lies a hope." quoted by John F. Kennedy.
Her most important advise: "Always believe in yourself." Never let other negative words affect you, strengthen your mind. Never let your destinies be determined by someone else. And she went on weaving a story about how she struggled to prove herself when she started in politics where there is no women and she fought for women to know more about health immunization.
But of all the traits above, there is one trait above all: compassion. And it is with this trait that has hellped her to go the extra mile. The pride in seeing women gain political power, the happiness in knowing women are aware of their rights and the enjoyment of being a mother to 3 independent sons. These has pushed her to create political awareness to others, to be actively involved in social activities, to be a prominent political figure who can still connect to everyone from the peasants to the VIPs and to make a difference in the world (or at least females in Malaysia). And that is how her speech bring tears to my eyes.
So will I heed her agenda? To bring more women to the political arena, to have more councils headed by women and to motivate women to go beyond their traditional boundaries? You bet I will. If you are not doing enough to contribute to the community, it is never too late to start.
