If I can Post on PostSecret

What is your deepest, darkest secret? What is it that you can write in your diary and swear to never show anyone? What would you write on a postcard and deliver to God if you could? What burden are you bearing on your shoulders that you wish you can scream out to the world? Admit it, everybody has their own dark secrets. It is a matter of how big and how much it will affect the life of others.

This is the concept behind PostSecret, an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard. It is a place of release, a place to throw your secrets on a piece of paper for the world to see and not have anyone know. If I could post one, this would be it.

Lately, I have been feeling the tendency to not indulge in the pleasures or trappings of life (including sex, haha, I'm a virgin again. Well, this includes food as I am seriously getting thinner by the day, not on purpose though) but to contribute to the other side of life. To help those in need, those who are hungry, those who are homeless but I am bound to a job that I profoundly love :) So I will do something about it later. I noticed that as long as you keep living life with the sole purpose of making money just to buy more things, eat more good food and watch more movies, you will never have enough, be satisfied and this will be an endless vicious cycle. Those who knows me know that I do not condone eating sharks fin (have you seen how sharks are killed for this?), I do not eat beef (as they have worked hard to plough the fields for us according to Buddhism) and I tend to appreciate those who sacrifice themselves for anything.

I realised that the more materials you chase after, the more you need it. Life can be pretty interesting without it too. It teaches you to be creative, to appreciate everything and it teaches you humility.

Somebody who inspired me once told me the story of the starfish while I was contemplating how unfair life is and why can't I do something about it. He said, 'Do you know the story of the Starfish. Someone was walking along the beach and saw from afar a boy bending along the beach to pick up a starfish and throwing it into the sea. He repeated this action on each and every starfish. He asked the youth the purpose of the effort. "The tide has washed the starfish onto the beach and they cannot return to the sea by themselves," the youth replied. "When the sun rises, they will die, unless I throw them back to the sea."

He surveyed the vast expanse of beach, strectching in both directions beyond my sight. Starfish littered the shore in numbers beyond calculation. He said, "But there are more starfish on this beach than you can ever save before the sun is up. Surely you cannot expect to make a difference."

The youth paused briefly to consider the stranger's words, bent to pick up a starfish and threw it as far as possible. Then, he simply said, "I made a difference to that one."

He left the boy and went home, deep in thought of what the boy had said, returned to the beach and spent the rest of the day helping the boy throw starfish in to the sea.

So at least for the start of this year, I donated my blood through the Singapore Blood Bank and got a nice piece of snack and organiser for my contribution. But best of all, I know that I could have just saved a life :).

NEW YEAR 2008 Resolution

So, what is my New Year Resolution this year? If you remember my last year's resolution, I had already thought of this year's resolution so now I shld be thinking of 2009 right? Wrong! I am going to let things be this year, no planning and let life happen. I believe one should not plan too much cos my hardest lesson learnt is things usually don't turn out as expected. And you get let down. So, in contrary, I will just let go and live life, for a change. It's like ordering Roti Prata just to find out that what you liked was actually the gravy and not the dough of the prata. In life, you know what to order but it is the sides that makes it more interesting. As long as you still have a direction.

Just like this movie which says that 'His life might have ended but he lived forever in the hearts of many'. So, do something meaningful in your life and live everyday of your life. Go watch the movie P.S. I Love You, from a book by Cecelia Ahern. You will learn to live your life everyday :)

So, HAPPY NEW YEAR and May 2008 be a splendid and prosperous year for all. :)

'Instead of being more organized or controlling in your approach, allow for serendipity. Happy accidents happen when you look side to side or up, not always forward. Don't stop planning. Rather step out of the tunnel. Put yourself in situations that allow for the unexpected. Life is situationally driven. Learning happens in context. Be ready when opportunities arise. The more space you've cleared in your life for something new, the more right things will happen. More or less.

I Am On the Net! Yikes!

Imagine a world where every human being is tracked and there is a repository of people with their contact details and work experience noted in a website for the world to query and see. Wouldn't this sound like a movie of police investigation through the Internet aka, The Net? There is one now called ZoomInfo which lists automatically (unlike LinkedIn which you need to register to update your details and to add contacts) details of all people in the world that has some sort of a website or prominent working experience, at least crucial enough to have references who are already registered into the website.

I feel honoured for having a profile that is quite high up there for such a common name and for not registering into the website. I queried for my name and it returned people from Good Governance organization and even an American Society of Aging, proving that people with this name are people who would end up doing something good and kind to the society. And when I clicked into it, I get to see my pretty photo :) and all my work experience from websites with considerably high traffic that has my name in them. But most important of all, with my profile up here, I am actually contactable for any kind of job recommendation and references. And with registration into LinkedIn and Facebook, I have not missed out any opportunities to cast my network wider, not for social contacts, mind you but just for long term future references. It is important to build your portfolio and brand through the most prominent mediums now. You never know who you might just know from a simple click of a button. Now, if only some irritating people stop doing so much poking and warring on Facebook. Hehe :)
